New Thatch

Walking along Station Road in Cholsey I noticed some scaffold around this thatched cottage, the owner told be it was having the ridge re-thatched.  A day or so later the thatcher had started

Lots of material falling off the roof

A few days later it looked finished and the chicken wire was being placed over the thatch

The front was nearly done

Days later it was finished and the scaffold gone
The chimney was finished off with mortar to inhibit water ingress
The whole roof looked much better and I'm told added another ten years to it's life

  1. Whoa. that is a lot of work. And its result is outstanding.

  2. It looks very smart. Always assumed you had to have the whole roof rethatched.

  3. Hello, I like the thatched roofs. I wish we had them here. Enjoy your day, have a happy week ahead.

  4. Neat job. Always interesting to see a craftsman at work.

  5. Thank you for sharing this!

  6. How fabulous is that roof! Being originally from Devon where thatched cottages are prevalent, I've always loved them. Hopefully this artisan craft will never die out, although I've heard that often it's no longer passed down to sons (and perhaps even daughters) as was usual over the centuries, which of course is sad. The 'old ways' for so many things were always special, and I guess I'm showing my age by missing things that were important and lovely in my childhood years!

  7. That is so cool. I love that roofs are still being thatched like this. Beautiful.

  8. I wondered what was going on when I saw that first photo. It looks very nice now.
