We had them strip one rose nigh on bare a couple of years ago, this year we have managed to deter them when we see them by either cutting off the affected part of getting rid of the odd one.

It's probably no consolation to you, but you are the proud owner of some sawfly larvae. I expect you'd probably prefer roses.

And they don't even ask for permission.
Apparently cayenne pepper works to prevent them, they don't like the taste.
Oh dear! Don't you wish they'd eat weeds instead?

Just not fair. Why do they not eat bindweed with that verocity?
