Opening the Lock

This is Aldermaston Wharf Lock, the area below it is the basin area for the narrowboats to turn and tie up while wait to go through a nearby swingbridge.
The lock is on the  Kennet Navigation and from here you head to Newbury.

I think I'd like to sit on that grass and write. :)

There is a seat to my left if you need it and I'm sure I could find a picnic for you.

Not entirely correct, this is pure canal. The River Kennet splits off about a mile west from here (the direction you're looking in), runs about 1/4 mile south from here and joins the canal again two miles or so east at Ufton.

The basin on the right used to be a bit longer and was a link to the railway, where goods were transferred between the canal and railway. But that was a long time ago.

Thanks I've changed it to Navigation from river. I wondered what it was over to the right as I could see part went on further then was cut off.
