Hatchment at St Mary

Something a bit different today, this is an Hatchment or heraldic achievement and they can be seen in a lot of churches throughout the UK. This one is in St Mary the Virgin Silchester, I 'll be showing more in the future

From the 17th Century

Not quite as old as some of the murals I have shown but still very old. This one I think dates back to the 17th century and was on the wall of a Church I visited in Wales.

The first one you see is only a partial and the rest may have been damaged at some stage
The next is behind the altar and shows a bit more though I am not sure what it is meant to be.

But this I think is a go at the painting Royal Crest painting, the unicorn and crown are shown on this. The church dates from the 17th century so backs this up, least that is what I am surmising.

If you wist to see what a treasure this church is then check back on Sunday to my blog called

Tree on the Bank

This tree used to be in the middle of a field till they put a road though now it stands on a bank near a layby overlooking the main road.

And if you wondered why I stopped to take the photo it was because I saw the sculpture of the otter chasing the salmon

Private A. Abdey

Normally I would post some snippet of a place I had been or something of interest on Our World Tuesday but today as we remember the starting of World War 1 I thought I would share a blog I normally write use on My Grave Place

One Hundred Years ago the first World War Started and Britain went to war with Germany. At the time the Royal Berks territorials were on summer camp Private Alfred Abdey would have been with them but for the fact he was in Hospital at the time in Wallingford. He passed away the day after war was declared on the 5th August 1914. Because he died in service he was given a Commonwealth War Grave like many of his comrades who died on the Battlefield.

His Brother  Lance Corporal Herbert John Abdey is Remembered on Loos Memorial, the panel reference is 93- 95 which I fear means his body was never found and is remembered on Alfred's Headstone

You can read more about the men from Cholsey who gave their lives for their country in the link I gave at the beginning. The War did affect the village and I fear many families were destined to die out the Abdeys being one as I noticed this last grave not far away in the new churchyard

Medieval wall paintings

These medieval wall paintings (14th Century) were uncovered in North Stoke Church in Oxfordshire
Considering the age I think they have survived very well

Newbuilding on the Rise

After my week of Didcot Powerstation I think a change is needed so here is one I took of a new building going up opposite where I work. A row of trees were sacrificed for this, Think I prefer the trees.  This is only a quarter of the building, there is more to go on yet.

Just round the corner this is the other building going up at the moment. These were taken a week ago so next photos will show a difference
