A Little Walk

A few weeks ago my wife & I went for a short walk around where we live so here are a few photos of what we saw

Cows munching on hay in one of the small meadows

Right there is a footpath here through the field

The bridge here is at the end of the path behind where I took the photo

The brook runs past the village further along

Above this is further along across the field near the brook you saw. You look towards Aston Upthorp

Left this is a place we call the Bullshole and a place as children that we all used to play. Over the years it has become well overgrown as no cattle come to drink here now.

A little further along you cross the brook  and if you walk through the wood you find this plaque

Over the 18 years since it was planted the wood has grown and hides the old railway embankment you could see

When I was a child this was grazing land where cattle used to be the filed was given to the village to mark the Queens Jubilee and is called Jubilee field. Millennium wood is at the end and was planted for future generations.
Hope you enjoyed the walk

East End Farm

East end farm in Cholsey has been there as long as I can remember and no doubt longer before that. A few years ago planning went in for the land to be redeveloped and so ensued a battle to stop this happening.  To my mind it was only a matter of time before the developers moved in and after having planning turned down a couple of times it went to appeal with the government who upheld the appeal. That meant the place would be demolished and work on new housing could begin.

This was the farm back in 2013 when it was still a riding stables it's farming days had ceased a while ago though they did still keep sheep on other parts of the farm still owned

There were some large buildings around the farm some older than others

A couple of weeks ago this hording went up prior to that the farm owners were still living there, then one weekend the went and the hoarding went up

There little house looks like this now nearly demolished
The old farm buldings have gone and are just a memory. It will not belong before you see houses being built and when it does I will show you the photos.

The Crown

Driving through the village of South Moreton the other day I noticed some signs proclaiming Save our Pub. The pub in question was the Crown which had cosed a while ago and was for sale. The villagers had gotten a petition together to try and save the pub for the village

This is the Crown, unfortunately I don't have a photo of it in its open state but once it was very popular,in fact I used to go there when I was younger for the odd meal. The landlord would laugh at peoples looks when they were served up with a stake as big as a plate with some chips and peas on it, most people failed to finish the banquet on a plate. After he retired a few others took the pub over and it still served a good meal though it was a little upmarket now. What with the economy the way it was the pub failed to keep going and closed down. This left the village with no pub (it's not the only one) so now a campaign has started to keep the pub open.

I can only wish them luck in their endeavour as it would be a shame to loose another village pub.

End of the Towers

My Sunday photo was of the Cooling Towers at Didcot Powerstation 3 minuets before they were blown up. The build up started the week before with people from all over the place let alone the locals getting a photo of the cooling towers. If you believed the press you would think the whole lot was coming down but it was only the 3 South towers by the town. The contractors would not put it off till a more reasonable hour so it was taking place between 3 & 5 AM. I went along to see the event with my sons. The Powerstation is over 40 years old & I remember it being built watching the new electric pylons going up now it was going.

Not the last sunset but the last one I took of all the towers a few days before the event, The three on left are going. it was taken just outside our village. You can see the powerstation from most of South Oxfordshire. When it was built it was Berkshire
2:40 am in the morning & lit up like Christmas
3 minutes to go
Bang and off they go, I nearly missed it and hit the remote button to set the camera off when some one said there they go. I've enhanced the photos a bit to show more detail, the orange glow is the explosions

The first tower is well on the way down and the second following with the third starting it's decent
The first is nearly down with dust coming off
This is what I saw as far as light is concerned but you can see the first has fallen and the second nearly down
The last moments of the third cooling tower as it brakes up, I might add the sound of the explosions came just after this
That's it all they are all gone and we went home
About 12 hours later from the same spot.
If you type in to YouTube Didcot Powerstation Demolition you can see videos of the even but here are a couple I like. The first was taken not far from the powerstation and the second about half a mile from where I was stood so is the same as what I was looking at.

5th June 1944

On the night of the 5th June 1944 70 years ago today the liberation of Europe began.

They took off from RAF Harwell and the surrounding area was the last view for many they would
see.

Three Months Later

Back in February I showed some photos of a flooded footpath well I thought you might like to see how it liked now.

Last time I was here the  water was by the lampost
This is the signpost in this photo

Last time I looked at the bridge was from the bank on the left

Same underpass but the other side which looked like this last time I was here

All this was underwater

And so would I have been back then. Taking Part in Our World Tuesday
