These photo's were taken back in August 2010 when I went to Banbury with my wife, we were only there for a few hours so only had a quick look around
Banbury Town Hall
Really stuck out this old wholesaler though it closed many years ago and is now an estate agent well at least it was then it could be anything now. The writing on the wall gives you an idea what they sold there all those years ago
The Fine lady on her horse which is based on the nursery rime
"Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
And she shall have music wherever she goes"
This is Banbury Cross
One of the main transport years ago was the Canal, this is the Oxford Canal, this part is beside the Castle Quay shopping centre
It is mostly used for leisure now though this cruiser looks like it is making a meal of things
and it gets busy
You have to open your own lock gates as well
That's it folks I must admit I would like to go back as there is a church there I'd love to look around

I remember the rhyme from my school days. I think I have briefly visited Banbury but I can't remember when. It looks an interesting town.
I love seeing photos from 2010. Seems like such a long time ago. Lovely little town for walking around.

A charming series of captures here Spud. Having lived in Oxford for 2 years in the early 70's, I am somewhat familiar with the area - beautiful. It sure looks busy (dare I say hectic?!) on the canal :-). Hope you get a return visit.

I had to see that when we went there along with Banbury Cross which disappointed me, I thought it would be a cross
You lived in Oxford in the 1970's I used to work over there then, spent a lot of time in the Corn Dolly
Nice tour of the town. One thing that has always stuck in my mind from watching Jack Hargreaves on TV is that a "cock-horse" was an extra horse that would be hired to help pull waggons up the steep hill leading out of the town. It would then be ridden back down to Banbury Cross. It's a pity that you didn't see the fine lady!
Jack Hargreaves now that is a name from the past. The hiring of a horse would make sense as there is quite a steel hill going out of the town
