Oxford Skyline

Couple of weeks ago I was up at the John Ratcliffe Hospital which is not my favourite place but at least the view from the top floor on a good day is worth looking at. So as the camera was in my pocket I took a few photos over towards Oxford

Here we look over New Marston towards Oxford, the hills in the distance are Wytham woods

 Looking in the Elsfield direction

In the distance is the city centre where the university's are, lot of work going on there at the moment looking at the cranes you can see

Last one, the road is quite empty considering, most of the time it is chock a block with traffic and people tiring to get in the carpark.

Sky at Brightwell Baldwin

If you saw my post earlier this week on Brightwell Baldwin you would have seen a view through the village, well this is another but showing the sky overhead that day

Above is the original photo I took in the village, after posting it Google waved their wand and it came out looking like it does below. You choose which you prefer

Brightwell Baldwin

Taken in the beginning of June when I visited the church there. Not much to tell you about the Village other than it's built around the country house there the seat of the Stone Family who are buried in the church there. The house was burnt down in 1786 and rebuilt in 1790 but has since been demolished leaving only the kitchen wing surviving an interesting cruciform dovecote nether of which I saw when I was at the church

The Lord Nelson Public House which is 17th or 18th century

It's now a gastro pub and from what I have seen quite busy

The old pub sign showing its age

And a look up through the village

I'll leave you with this shot of a cottage I saw when I parked up near the church

Headington Road Oxford

A few months ago I took my son over the Oxford Brooks University which used to know as Oxford Polytec. I might add I had the privilege of seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd there only a short time before some were killed in the air crash. While my son was in the uni I went of to visit St Clements church not far away and on my way there & back I took a few photos.

Just across the road is the old entrance to Headington Hill Hall now part of Brooks University Campus

just along from the entrance you can see this bridge which crosses Headington Hill

II think it allowed the original  owner of Headington Hill Hall private acess  to his estate

Looking back towards the campus

Headdington Hill looking down to Oxford

and uphill towards the London Road

Above the gates leading to Headington Hill Park  and on the left is St Clements Street names after the church which is along over to my right

I think the pillar above is the Old Oxfrord City Boundary beside Suth Park. On the right I took a walk back this way through the park where you can see in the distance some of the students off some place

Headington Hill Park

It's also quite popular with walkers and joggers like these two

Above one of the pointerd for a run and on the left a look up Headinton hill towards the bridge

Above is Headington Hill Hall  wich was built for the Morrel family who were local brewers in Oxford (It was never a favorite of mine). I'm not sure what happened to the family but it ended up being owned by Oxford City Council and is now leased by Brooks University who hav etaken over a large part of the area. On the right is a sculpture on the campus

The campus and students hanging around

Headington Road
And the new university camupus sign. The building is under going some renivation at the moment and will open agan in the not too distant future though none of it is how I remember the place. Hope you liked the little walk round.

Blue Boar

It's surprising what you find walking around a town. My wife & I were walking past this pub when she noticed a mural & pointed it out to me.

As soon as I saw what she was pointing at I quickly popped in the courtyard and got a photo

The Covered Market

The Covered Market in Oxford opened in 1774 in an effort to clear the streets of untidy & messy market stalls in the city. It is locate between High Street and Market Street and between Cornmarket Street & Turl Street. The main entrances are off High Street & Market Street with four entrances from each street.

These are a couple of entrances, on the left with the tourists in one of them on High Street   and the second  is the Golden Cross entrance on Cornmarket

You come on off Cornmarket though here

Coming in off the High Street like we did you see this view

Yeas ago there would have been butchers shops and other produce markets here, now it's cafes and restaurants

There are also a few gift shops like this one selling hand made purses

This was one I liked as it sold produce to grow in your garden including seeds

I loved the name of this shop, and the other one a little further along

I was not sure what this one was till I read the name in the photo, It's an Ice Cream Parlour

A cake shop and was selling individual Mothers day cakes, Yummy, lucky Mummy

I'd seen the small guitars in London but Oxford went one better selling the drum kits as well. I thought they were great

Think this is the central part of the Market

With the red Pillar type Post box

I hope you enjoyed your little tour of Oxford Covered Market, there is more to it and usually more crowded but it was early on Sunday Morning. The place is worth a visit even if it is not the same as it used to be but it does get crowded later in the day.
