Old Culham Bridge

Culham bridge used to be part of the old road that ran from  Abingdon and was once a toll bridge (the tollhouse is still there). The bridge spans a cut called swift ditch which is made to bypass Abingdons shallows.

You can see this plaque on the bridge

This is looking across the bridge to the toll house

I love these old stone bridges and the history behind them. We don't seem to have any in Western Australia, mostly they are in Tasmania. But my posts lately seem to have a lot of history in them.
Have a wonderful week. I am linking up to you through Our World Tuesday.

I hop you do get to visit.

Funny I used to hate it at school now I find history everywhere

Billy Blue Eyes said...

Yes it does, no doubt helped by the fact it does not get traffic now.

When you think about it Australia had not been found when the bridge was built.

Your photos just make me want to go travel your neck of the woods. One of these days. A civil war skirmish in 1645. That changes my thoughts about equating civil wars only with our North vs. South in the 1860s.

That's a beautiful old bridge.

Billy Blue Eyes said...

There was full scale battle in the next town to where I live and one guy was killed in the skirmish on that bridge.

Billy Blue Eyes said...

Yes I have to agree especially when you see what is built now.
