We had them strip one rose nigh on bare a couple of years ago, this year we have managed to deter them when we see them by either cutting off the affected part of getting rid of the odd one.

It's probably no consolation to you, but you are the proud owner of some sawfly larvae. I expect you'd probably prefer roses.
