Lollingdon Sky

From  The walk we took a few weeks ago some of the skys I took around Lollingdon.

 Here we look away from the farm towards the village, Lollingdon spring is on the far side of this field

 Looking back to wards the footpath we came along

 From the side of the hill towards the Ashdown hills or the downs as they are called now

and last the sky over Lollingdon hill and the sheep we saw

Well Stocked Phone Box

My showing the phone box used as a library in Wales prompted me into driving along to a village not far away from where I live where I had seen another one used for this purpose. The times I have drove past some one was using the layby it was near but I took a chance the other day and stopped off  in the empty space.

These phoneboxes were well used in the past when there were people did not have their own phone to use at home, they were also used to phone home when you were away

They have become an icon of our country and many villages have adopted them rather than let phone company take them away. They get used for different purposes, Streatley had put theirs to a good use in that it has become a mini library and a well stocked one it is

I was well impressed in that they had placed a shelving unit in it and shelves were stocked with books

On the side of the phone box were two picture frames with notices in them, one told you it was the Streatley Telephone Box Book Exchange the other told you the rules and listed the books in colour codes to tell you what type of book it was fiction , children etc

I notice one book by an author I like to read and was very tempted to borrow it. Good to know where I can borrow a book from.

St Afan Llanfechan

This weeks Church Explorer comes from St Afan Llanfechan a small country church which is set back off the main A483 road between Builth Wells and Beulah

Had a few Skywatch photos lined up that I could use this week but decided I should show this one of a Dawn sky that I took a couple of weeks ago on a cold day, The sun just rising and the sky trails and wispy clouds on the deep blue sky made it for me

Gwenddwr

Last week on Wordless Wednesday I posted some photos of a phonebox that was used as a library, it is in a village called Gwenddwr not far from the church. The village is not large comprising of only a few houses, what post office there was has long gone.

A memorial seat beside the finger signs pointing the way to the local Town and the next village

The seat faces up this road  which takes you to outlying farms and the Brycheiniog Forest. You can make out the chapel roof above the building you see by the car,I think this may have been the village pub at one time. The church I visited is over to the right

Across the road are a couple of cottages and the road that will take you to Builth Wells via a single track road with some steep hills

The first cottage sells goods the sign in the window tells you there are eggs and and cakes along with pickled eggs, some are kept in the cabinet you see where an honesty box where they trust you to leave the money.

St. Dubricus Gwenddwr

In this weeks Church Explorer we are back in Wales visiting the last of the churches from the Erwood area I was in before Christmas. You also get to see the chapel that is over the road from the church

Fading Skytrails

Taken on one of our walks before Christmas I noticed skytrails that were fading away

Phonebox Library

Side Streets

Just before Christmas I had been in Wallingford and while waiting for the bus home I had a wander around some of the side streets and took a few photos.

Along Hart Street I noticed the piece of land that had been cleared now had  a wall built around the outside. Looking at the planning it show that there will be four dwellings to be built in this small space

I walked along Wood street to the corner of st Leonard's Lane, the house here on the corner looks like it may have been a pub or  shop at some time in the past

Going around to Thames Street and we look towards St Leonard's Church

Just beside the blue house you could see above is this magnificent residence which has been made in to flats now. Look on the door frame

You see this plaque telling you George Dunlop Leslie used to live here, I must admit I had never heard of him but he did paint some panels in St Leonard's Church The link will show you the church and the paintings in the chancel.

Hampstead Norreys

This week I return to visit Hampstead Norreys a village that is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It is not the first time I have been here but this time I stopped off to get some photos of some chest tombs that had been restored since my last visit, I also got a few photos of the inside 

Lidl Sky

Before Christmas had to go into the main sorting office to pick up  package but could not help stopping off to take a photo of the new Lidl supermarket  being built or should I say in the final stages of the build

Lidl is one of the lower cost supermarkets that are popular in the UK and I have no doubt this one will be very busy when it opens, I might add it is the only one I have seen with a electric car charge point
