County Hall

Last week  I showed a couple of photos from Abingdon for Wordless Wednesday well today I will tell you a little bit about what is in the photos.

Abingdon Bridge which crosses the river Thames

The Old Gaol which was built to hole Napoleonic prisoners and probably built by them as well. It was derelict when I used to go to collage in the town and then was made into a leisure centre. That closed and now it is being converted into flats.

Abingdon used to be the County Town of Berkshire till some numpties decided to move the boundary's and placed it in Oxfordshire, this was it's County Hall. The first photo is original sign you saw when you came into the town, now its a scabby old Oxford County one. County Hall is now used as a museum and was open the day I was in town so my wife and I had a look round.

Abingdon was famous for building MG's, this was the last one made

Would you believe it that they brought the car in though this window. I saw the video of them doing it

You can see an excellent exhibition on MGs in the museum

It was also famous fro brewing beer and did so for hundreds of years till Green King come along and bought the place, then sold off the brewery and brewed the beer elsewhere.

The roof was open to look round so it was rude not to. This is the old gaol you saw in the earlier photo

Here we look down at the town square

This road leads out of town towards Witney and is called Ock Street after the river which flows into the Thames

This was the Brewery which is no more and is now turned into flats

One of the sights you see for miles around is Didcot Power station and is due to be demolished. The first three towers you see in the foreground come down on the 27th July

Just to prove I was on top of County Hall this is the top. Hope you enjoyed my little tour.

How to build a Tower Crane

The other day I noticed a mobile crain on the building site nearby where I work, not unusual.  I thought they were putting up the steel frame of the building

Then I noticed a frame near the crane and realized they were going to put up a tower crane
I missed the next stage to get a photo of and the cab was in place when I got the next photo
You can see the guy checking things out in the cab
But they were still lifting concrete blocks
So if you wondered how a crane was held down it's because of a few tones of concrete blocks
Next day it was lifting the rest of the crane in place
That's how they put a tower crane together
That,s not the biggest crane we have had, check out the link if you want to see it.

Kites & Buzzards

The other day my wife and I were watching this tractor raking up the hay in a field nearby

while overhead an aerial display was going on

The Red Kites were swooping after small rodents like mice & voles

There was more than one

So here are a few of the photos I took of them

Red Kite after taking a swipe at the mice

A buzzard flying past

Then landing in a tree

Kite on the wing

Red Kite trailing Grass

A kite and Buzzard flying past each other and another pair of kites one trailing a grass tail

This crow tried to dive bomb the Kite, he just swerved out the way as you can see.

Not sure if he has a mouse of is claring the grass away, eitherway this is how they feed on the wing

Another taking a peck at somthing while flying
I'll finish with the buzzard as he few away.
